The Pioneer Youth Philharmonic of Bulgaria’s National Palace of Children will perform a symphonic concert in Albena on 30 August 2026 at 8:00 p.m. in Sea Hall at the five-star Maritim Paradise Blue. Admission is free.

The orchestra will perform one of the masterpieces of classical music – Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, conducted by Lyubomir Denev Jr.

The Pioneer Youth Philharmonic has a remarkable history and holds a special place in Bulgaria’s classical music scene.

Lyubomir Denev Jr. – conductor and composer

Born in Sofia in 1988, Lyubomir Denev Jr. is one of Bulgaria’s recognised conductors and composers of the younger generation. He is the son of renowned jazz pianist and composer Lyubomir Denev.

He graduated from the Lyubomir Pipkov National School of Music in piano and later studied opera and symphonic conducting at the National Academy of Music under Prof. Plamen Dzhurov. He also earned a doctorate in the same field.

Denev became conductor of the Pioneer Philharmonic in 2010. Under his direction, the orchestra has received prestigious distinctions including the “Musician of the Year” award from Allegro Vivace and two Crystal Lyre awards.

From the 2025/2026 season, he also serves as conductor of the renowned Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble. Previously, he spent two seasons as chief conductor of Sinfonietta Shumen.

In 2014, he co-founded Four For Music, a company recording orchestral music for major international film, television and gaming productions. He also conducts at the Film Scoring Academy of Europe.

His international recognition includes the Stefan Linev Young Conductor Award in 2021. He has also been a semifinalist in a conducting competition in Berlin, where he conducted the Berliner Symphoniker.

The remarkable history of the Pioneer Philharmonic

The Pioneer Philharmonic was founded in 1952 by distinguished Bulgarian conductor Prof. Vladi Simeonov. Bringing together children and young musicians, the orchestra has become one of the emblematic institutions of Bulgarian musical culture.

Its history also includes a memorable encounter with legendary American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. During a US tour in 1979, Bernstein attended a rehearsal of the young musicians at the United Nations and took up the baton to conduct them.

Today, the Pioneer Youth Philharmonic continues its active work within the National Palace of Children and regularly performs joint concerts and projects with established professional musicians.

The energy of the young musicians, Tchaikovsky’s powerful music and Lyubomir Denev Jr.’s conducting promise an exceptional musical evening in Albena.
